Cha-Chi's Village and the Saltwater Underground Railroad

This is the first event of the two-day program. The memorial marker will be the City of West Palm Beach’s only marker of Land Acknowledgment thus far and will join a similar memorial marker of the “Freedom Tree” at Loxahatchee Battlefield in Jupiter unveiled May 20, 2023, in observance of Florida’s Emancipation Day.

The Monument has been made possible by grants from ArtLife WPB, the African American Research Library and Cultural Center of Palm Beach County, the National Trust for Historic Preservation, and the National Endowment for the Humanities.

The weekend's activities, commemorating Palm Beach County's Seminole Maroon history, are held in partnership with the City of West Palm Beach’s ArtLifeWPB and the Office of West Palm Beach Commissioner​ Cathleen Ward, with special support from the City of West Palm Beach Parks Department, Palm Beach County Parks, and the Florida Humanities Florida Talks Speakers Series.

Bus departs Sunset Park in West Palm Beach at 11:30 am, on Saturday, January 13. The bus tour of Seminole sites in Boynton Beach launches a weekend of informative activities commemorating and bringing to light South Florida’s fascinating Seminole Maroon history and heritage.

Annual Seminole Maroon Spiritual RemembranceSunday, January 14, 10:00 am Loxahatchee River Battlefield Park (at Riverbend Park) 9060 W. Indiantown Rd., Jupiter.

The two-day event culminates on Sunday, January 14, as a tradition of 31 years continues with the Annual Seminole Maroon Spiritual Remembrance at Riverbend Park. The program of Speakers begins at 10:00 am, and the tour of the battlefield site begins at 1:00 pm.
